Use 5 GHz when you are close to the router and want speed, such as streaming or video calls. Use 2.4 GHz for rooms further away, through walls, and for smart-home devices that only support it.
Most modern routers broadcast two WiFi bands at once, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. They are the same internet connection travelling on two different radio frequencies, and each has strengths.
2.4 GHz: further, but slower and busier
- Longer range. The signal travels further and passes through walls more easily.
- Lower top speeds than 5 GHz.
- More crowded. Many devices share this band, including neighbouring routers, Bluetooth devices, cordless phones and microwave ovens, so it suffers more interference.
- Works with older and simpler devices. Many smart plugs, cameras and older gadgets only support 2.4 GHz.
5 GHz: faster, but shorter range
- Higher speeds and usually a steadier connection for streaming, gaming and video calls.
- Less crowded, so less interference in busy areas.
- Shorter range, and walls and floors weaken it more.
- Not supported by every device. Older phones and gadgets may not see it.

- Streaming, video calls or gaming in the same room as the router, or one room away: 5 GHz
- A room far from the router or behind several walls: 2.4 GHz
- Smart plugs, cameras and older devices: 2.4 GHz
- A work laptop close to the router: 5 GHz
How to choose in practice
Many routers use one WiFi name for both bands and let your device pick. Others show two names, often with 5G at the end of one. If you see two, connect close-by devices to the 5 GHz one and further ones to the 2.4 GHz one. If your phone keeps holding on to a weak signal from far away, try switching to the other name.
